A Focused Eye on Housing Affordability

The Sydney Business Chamber, Western Sydney says the announcement of a new strategic direction for the NSW Government’s land and development agency, Landcom, will help address housing affordability across greater Sydney.
David Borger, Director of the Sydney Business Chamber, Western Sydney, said, “It is clear that housing affordability needs to be on top of the agenda and it is great to see the Government create a plan, Our Strategic Directions for Landcom, that aims at fixing this crisis.
“Western Sydney is experiencing a boom in population growth and currently there is a lack of supply to help meet the needs of home buyers.
“The Greater Sydney Commission has already set housing supply targets for local councils and this new plan will see Landcom work with councils to unlock development opportunities and will play a significant role in making this happen,” Mr Borger said.
“In addition, through increased partnership with the private sector, Landcom can help unlock both vacant and established sites to deliver housing close to vital public amenities.
“There’s a big role for Landcom to play in facilitating opportunities in Western Sydney where ownership is fragmented. Bringing landholders together to create new vibrant communities supported by quality services and infrastructure is essential.
“People in Western Sydney want to live close to where they work, near public transport and in areas where they feel connected to the rest of the community, which is why a mix of different housing is important.
“If we do not create more housing then we will see an exodus from Sydney to lower cost cities and we must move before it is too late,” he said.
