Great News for Visitor Economy

The Sydney Business Chamber has applauded the State Government’s announcement that revitalisation of the Sydney Fish Market within the Bays Precinct is on its agenda.

The Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber, Patricia Forsythe said, “This has been a long-awaited decision and one that will create a facility that benefits its setting beside one of the world's best urban harbours."

“The Sydney Fish Market is not only popular with Sydneysiders but is one of the most visited Sydney attractions for international visitors despite the fact the buildings are in dire need of renewal.

"Today’s announcement the Sydney Fish Market will be at the heart of an expanded market precinct, is a welcome move as it will create a new attraction for locals and visitors and ensure the reputation of Sydney as a great harbour city is enhanced.

“The proposed redevelopment will see the market moved from its current Blackwattle Bay location to a site nearby and will double in size.

The Sydney Seafood School will be expanded into a larger, culinary training facility and there will be improved parking and access for customers and suppliers.

“There is never a dull moment at the market. It is constantly abuzz, starting at 5.30 in the morning when seafood buyers arrive to check the day’s catch before the auction, and ending with restaurants offering delicious and gourmet meals for keen diners at night. It is no surprise the market is adored by the 2.7 million visitors it attracts annually.

“When complete, the new market will have the potential to deliver more than 2,000 jobs and increase its retail spend by $4.78 billion in 10 years,” Mrs Forsythe said.

The new market will be a major drawcard for the Bays Precinct along with the proposed technology hub at White Bay Power Station and a 5.5 kilometre promenade around the water’s edge.
